Tagged Tuesday: What have I done for me lately?

As women, and mothers in particular, we have a tendency to be great caregivers... Except when it comes to taking care of self. We live in an era of self love and the like, but many of us still struggle with it. I am also guilty of that; oftentimes putting myself last on the list.

Case in point: About a year ago I began seeing a massage therapist on a monthly basis. I had been having really bad tension pain as a result of chronic pain. It had gotten so bad that my doctor sent me to physical therapy. Not too long afterward I was looking for ways to cut some things from my budget to save money, and the first thing I considered was my monthly massage. I mentioned to a couple of friends and my oldest daughter that I was going to cancel and they all said two things: "Why?" and "You need that."

Since then I've taken on a new mindset; getting a monthly massage is a part of my healthcare plan. And it isn't even on the radar for discontinuing. As someone who is a cancer patient and who suffers from chronic pain it becomes extremely important to be cognizant of how I treat myself.

Regardless of your need level, it's important to be true to you. I'm sure you know what the infamous "they" say: ‘If mama ain't happy, nobody's happy.’ Instead of the word happy in that saying insert other words. Try relaxed, content, at peace, etc. Get the point?

Here are a few ideas to help you get started on finding things you can do for yourself.

  1. Journaling
  2. Doodle absently
  3. Sip your favorite drink and gaze at nature, (a beautiful image, the drink in your cup)…
  4. Use the buy this get that for free coupon... For yourself.
  5. Lay down to rest
  6. Prop up your feet while watching TV, movie, etc... Alone.
  7. Take a long shower or bath with scented body oil.
  8. Go to a salon for a wash, cut, style or color.
  9. Make standing weekly (or monthly) manicure and pedicure appointments.
  10. Scrapbooking. Make one about YOU.

Basically, doing something for yourself is about finding things to do that make you feel happy, relaxed and ready to continue on with real life. So, you know I was going to ask: What have you done for you lately?
