Staycations vs. mini vacations

One of the best things about finding yourself alone at home during a weekend is the fact that you can do whatever you want to do. Of course there is always housework to finish or bills to pay, but sometimes we just have to chill out and take a vacation at home. That thought is where the cleverly coined word “staycation” comes in.

(Did you know the term staycation was added to the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary in 2009? Yup, that’s according to

I’ve taken advantage of staycations on quite a few occasions – long before it became a popular thing to do. But I didn’t know that sometimes when families indulge in a staycation they may visit attractions in their city or take advantage of local activities they hadn’t done before. That’s great if you want to do something a little different and take a break from everyday life. What may not be so great is the work that mom has to put in by preparing the meals, doing the chores and keeping the house in order. Face it, there isn’t going to be a maid coming in at the end of the trip to return everything to tip-top shape.

That’s why, when I feel like, I take mini vacations. Luckily, I have friends (and even a couple of relatives) all within a two-hour drive. Although I still have to clean up after myself it isn’t as much work as if I was at home. I get to enjoy the company of someone I care about as well as get a change of scenery, which is always good for the soul and spirit.

Now if I could just get all of my friends and family to move two to three hours away from me surrounding my location in a perimeter formation then I’d have tons of other mini vacation choices. Think they’ll go for that?

Another choice for mini vacations is visit a neighboring state, stay in a hotel and explore a city, or cities, of your choice. There are all sorts of things to do with little or no money, it’s just a matter of being creative.

What’s the last getaway you had? A mental relaxation and lazy staycation? A nearby mini vacation? Or a fabulous getaway and an awesome vacation?
