Wordless Wednesday: Reflection

5 Minutes for Mom WW participants

Feel my soft skin

I dare you. ;)

As many of you know I am extremely addicted to skincare products. You can see a sample of that here and some of my other product reviews here.) All you have to do is tell me it softens, it's natural, it reduces wrinkles and fine lines or any of the other variety of benefits and I must try it. It was no different when I learned about Skin Free™, which has the slogan: A New Direction in Skin Care.

I chose to review Skin Free's Niaouli Butter Stick and the Super Moisture Body Balm, but it took me forever to design on the products. Each one, on their SkinFree.net, lists the ingredients and benefits. Skin Free products have no fragrance, colorants, petroleum products or harmful chemicals, which is a definite plus. The company reports that patients with eczema have seen results from using just the soap, but Skin Free recommends using it in conjunction with one of their moisturizers.

I am really impressed after trying the products. The body balm is really thick and contains 100 percent of super rich butters and natural oils that were selected for their healing and emollient properties. I only had to use about a nickle to quarter-sized amount to cover both of my legs. It soaks in pretty quickly and I didn't feel oily or greasy. This balm is great for those with delicate and sensitive skin like I have. The only downside, if this classifies as one, is sensitive to extreme temperatures. So, if it gets too cold the ingredients separate. To alleviate this you can remove the top and pop the bottle in the microwave for a minute. Not only will it be a smooth oil-like cream, but it will be a nice warm, spa-like treatment.

The butter stick is perfect for those rough, dry areas like heels, knees and elbows. I smooth the stick on my heels daily and they are soft and crack free. I've seen women in the street who I want to stop and tell them about the Niaouli Butter Stick, I'm just saying.

I am more than pleased with Skin Free and I'm sure you will be as well. You can see the full line of products at SkinFree.net and there's a broad selection at Drugstore.com and CVS.com.

Weekly Inspiration: Thoughts, memories

Normally, when I think of the things, situations or people that are inspiring me I try to focus on the positive, the lovely, the blessings. This week it's not only good memories that are inspiring me, but bad memories and thoughts are also my fuel.

That's the push behind expressing my thoughts and getting back to a way of releasing some of the poetic, tortured contemplations that happen within my brain. There are times that those thoughts make way for inspiring, positive and equally poetic musings, but - as many artists (written, visual, etc.) - realize the creative bunch of us are often fueled by emotionally charged feelings.

Now, the reason the not-so-positive memories and thoughts are fueling me is because I want to remember what has happened over the past two years and the past month. Some of the pain and emotional hurt that I have felt needs to be released. The pain hurts my health, my heart and my life and trickles over into every activity, word and interaction that I have. There aren't any more tears that I wish to unleash.

There are times when the tears flow without my permission. When a thought triggers a pain I can not control. I hope to use that pain to fuel creativity, ideas and some type of positive release.

That is what's inspiring me this week.

What's inspiring you this week? Head on over to Maternal Spark to share your inspirations and inspire others.

Feet first

Like most women, I like to look nice. Even with a limited budget I try to wear stylish gear that highlights my best features. One thing that I am always on the lookout for is a great pair of heels that can be dressed up or dressed down, but that are comfortable, practical and sexy. Pretty large order to fill, huh?

For the most part, the types of shoes that I like the most are classic pumps with about a three-inch heel and a slight platform; strappy sandals with fabulous sex appeal as well as wedgies, clogs and high-heeled thongs. And, of course, I like to throw on a regular pair of flip flops now and then.

With colder weather approaching, I'm thinking about buying sexy (notice a theme, here?) women's winter boots. Although I don't normally worry about footwear for the winter, I saw a leather jacket in a catalog that was really nice and got to thinking that it would look great with a pair of tight jeans, high-heeled boots and a red motorcycle. ;)

Regardless of the type of shoe I want to wear I have to find a great deal at a retailer that carries exactly what I need. Speaking of shoes I need, I better be on the lookout for deals for the kids as well; they need some new shoes too.

I'm in ALL YOU Magazine

Even though I've been a writer and editor for about 15 years, I still get a thrill out of seeing my name in print. There have only been a few times when I'm on the other end of the pen (being written about), and this is one of those times. I am in Issue 10 (October 23rd) of ALL YOU magazine.

Pick up a copy and flip to page 53 to see what I'm talking about. Once you've done that come back and let me know what you think then read some great articles, clip some coupons and enjoy a fab magazine.

(BTW: You should heard my squeal when i saw my picture!)

Do your kids like water?

If you have trouble getting your children to drink water then you will probably want to introduce them to WAT-AAH! Rose Cameron, founder of WAT-AAH! is asking moms to take the challenge to see if their children will choose WAT-AAH, which has no sugar, over soda and juice drinks. She says the results will surprise you.

Now, I must admit, that I really don't have too much trouble getting my children to drink water, but the do like it better if they have a water bottle. When they got a look at the cool WAT-AAH bottles, they were completely sold. Especially my youngest who is hardest to convince to drink water over juice or milk.

Not only did the eagerly reach for the bottles, they wanted to know what they said. They thought the logo is cool and the words funny: Feel supaah! Think smartaah! Grow strongahh! Run fastahh!

Two-year-old Anna didn't even have to be told to drink her WAT-AAH!

Four-year-old Amareah waited patiently for me to open hers.

And 5-year-old Andre summed it up best, "Wow!"

Visit their blog, check out their site or purchase it from Amazon. I took the challenge; you should take it too. If you do, come back here and let me know. I'd love to see pics of your kids drinking WAT-AAH!

Impromptu trip

There were a couple of things I had been looking forward to this month. One was a trip to Miami on my birthday. Didn't happen. And, at the risk of causing some sort of emotional turmoil, I'll avoid telling you why. (Well, actually I don't want everyone to know. LOL...) Also, if anyone asks: Yes, I was out of town.

Wait, I've already digressed.

The other thing is a trip to the coast of Georgia for a friend's cousin's wedding. Then when the van thing happened, (I didn't have transportation for three weeks - tell you more about that later) that trip didn't seem possible either.

BUT I am pleased to share that myself and the three younger children were able to travel to St. Simons Island for an overnight visit. (Yup, I have transportation. YIPPEE! Thank the Lord!) I had kind of decided not to go because when I got the van on Saturday it was early afternoon, but my sister-friend Kellie encouraged me to go and the friend (Frankie!) said he still wanted us to come even if it was just overnight.

Besides, he was "coming by" to visit on his way back to Maryland and it made more sense to go get him than for him to take the bus. Add to that the fact that I really wanted the kids to go to the beach so I sucked up my dislike of driving and made the trip. Boy, am I glad that I did. I love the beach and just being able to enjoy it for about an hour or so was soothing and inspiring.

Before we walked down to the beach I took a couple of pictures of the kids sitting on the rocks while Frankie went to the store. When I turned around there was a lady who asked if I'd like her to take a picture of the four of us.

It was actually a perfect day for walking on the beach. The clouds kept creeping in front of the sun so it didn't get too hot and the breeze coming from the somewhat choppy ocean was refreshing. The two middle children go soaking wet! They loved getting down into the water and letting the ocean knock them over.

I walked out until the water was to the bottom of my shorts then ended up getting splashed on the booty when a nice-sized wave snuck up behind me. It was pretty funny.

The scenery was beautiful and I took several pictures that I'll share with you over the course of the week. Maybe I should say that I plan on sharing them with you over the course of the week. Hopefully I won't forget. :)

After such a trying month, emotionally speaking, this was a much-needed break. What did you do this weekend?

Disney Tickets

School is back in full swing and kids - and even their parents - need a little back-to-school break to beat the blues. Although some of us relish in the return to our daily schedules, we still have a tough time releasing the freedom and fun of summer. But there's one more chance to have a little fun: Take a trip to Orlando to visit Disney or other theme parks.

The fall season is a perfect time to go especially with a couple of holiday weekends approaching. You can take a trip for the Halloween festivities and you don't have to worry about breaking the bank for Disney Tickets. OrlandoFunTickets.com has some great discount tickets. Don't wait a minute longer to book one final trip for the year.

Mickey and all of his friends are waiting.

Elucidations

You know that letter, journal entry or poem you write that you don't want to share with the person or persons who you are writing about? You know those feelings and expressions you keep bottled up that you think others won't understand so you keep them trapped inside? You know the thoughts that haunt you whenever you're under your automatic operation switch?

What would yours say? ...

The journal entry
Seven days has since went by that the sound I love was heard
Had I had knowledge of this pending absence I would have prepared
Memorized the sounds, the rhythm, the hum of it all
Relished in the moment when my eyes last focused
To see it clearly on the screen of my mind
Play it on the speakers in my head... forever.

The random thoughts
One more sigh, one more moment, one more touch
A lifetime of dreams, fantasies, wishes gone
Lies, deception, passion, unknown moments
Secrets, doubt, rejection, fear
Brick walls, stone hearts, no turning back

The mysterious letter
Dearest Passing Introspection,

It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter. I'm not writing it for you or to you... I am writing it for me. Never has something felt so real then seemed like a dream. I still wake up and see you there. I hear your voice and see the images in songs. I see them in the words of novels, played out on the television screen. It's all around me. It's so real. So desired.

Maybe the images, words and sounds will fade with time, and maybe they won't. I don't think they will because it's the innermost, deepest, extremely surreal feeling from deep down, buried behind the brick wall inside the stone chest surrounded by cement. I didn't know it was there, it echoed faintly and was chissled out, fighting, forcing, seeping... pulled 'til it was free. It was free. It soared lightly at first, released into the cushioned air soaking up the surroundings and testing each space. Unbelievable. I.couldn't.believe.it.

I embraced it, released it, shared it and it was stolen, abandoned. Kicked. Bruised. I see the flutter of it still, the unsteady heartbeat, the lost pieces and I sweep up the remnants. Hold them tenderly and bloody my fingers trying to put the pieces back. I push and squeeze it all back into the stone chest. Slam the lid, pour the cement, build the wall and with sweat trickling down my brow and burning my eyes, I stumble, fall and slouch - exhausted and spent.

Regretfully,
The Seeker

Looking at the Sky on Friday

I rarely get to see a sunrise. In fact, I can't remember the last time - if ever - that I've seen the sun as it eases high into the sky. I happened to look out my back window this morning and the sunshine coming in seemed pretty bright. I moved all the way to the left to get a better look and, lo and behold, shining through the trees was that big ball of light.

When I stepped out onto the deck, this is what I saw. It took me a couple of tries to get a shot because I couldn't look in that direction. The brightness of the sun was blinding. The first shot is very interesting ... besides the sun and the trees there appears to be a big sitting on one of the branches. Is it a bird or a weirdly placed ray of light? I didn't see anything on that branch, but - then again - I couldn't really see.

I've never seen a bird like that in the area so I'm going to try to enlarge the photo so I can get a better look. Do you see a bird?

I really like the next photo 'cause of the colors of red that are sparked off of the trees and leaves by the sun.
When I turned to look at the sky in the opposite direction there was nothing but clear blue skies with wisps of clouds. What a welcome sight after so many dark days and rain. I hope we've seen the end of it even as I see my weather icon flashing with a storm warning.

Foggy, cloudy, drippy

That's the state of my mind...

Well, I guess drowsy, not drippy; but drippy goes with foggy and cloudy.

Hmmm... I hope this post makes some sort of sense.

I've sort of been sleep walking through my day. I'm very drowsy and not as up - mood-wise - as I should be, but there haven't been any waterfalls today. There was a slight trickling a little earlier this morning... I guess I've gotten a little numb. Angry and numb.

It hasn't been a productive day either but I guess every once in awhile it's okay to have a day like that. I'll blame it on the drowsiness. That drowsiness and my less-than-perky mood has resulted in an almost complete lack of anything to write about. My brain has been blank all day. I added a few things to my sidebar, checked my email, goofed off on Facebook and I actually laid on the couch for about two hours watching Charmed on television (thanks, Brion) this morning. My lounging caused my 2-year-old daughter to fall asleep so I had a semi-quiet morning.

The best part of my day was when Shaunalynn's name popped up on my caller ID. What a sweet surprise. I have the best blogging friends ever. I won't embarass them by being all gushy about how wonderful and thoughtful they are. It's amazing how someone who you haven't even met in person can be so caring. A call from a friend and a gift from another (thanks, Lin... the card made me cry!)... there are the emails and the FB comments. I thought about complaining earlier and saying I don't feel the love, but that isn't true. More accurately I feel love from places I didn't expect it. Nice.

There's really no definite point to this post. No hidden meaning or message. No creatively deep words. Just an expelling of thoughts. Well, I guess that's the point then, right?

Oh, and before I go, oodles of thanks to Brion, his wife and kids on my birthday... you made my day.

Control fleas

I never realized there was so much to think of when you have a pet. I know a couple of people who have dogs and they do a lot of research and make sure to have the right products for them. Among everything that needs to be done for "man's best friend," is ensuring the pet is free from fleas.

FleaControl.com is a guide to dealing with flea problems. There are pictures of fleas to assist in identification, general tips including some natural remedies as well as recommendations on what to do about flea bites. Don't let fleas take over your pet - and your home - get the information you need today.

Contemplating...

It has been quite some time since I've birthed a few creative lines. With thoughts twirling around in my head I am hoping by getting them out I'll get some relief. Brain relief, that is. Enjoy.

Contemplation
By Petula Renee Wright

There's something I want to say,
it crosses my mind everyday,
the thoughts getting in the way...

of my productivity.

If I tell you this one thing,
will it cause you to dance and sing
or sprout a fantasy wing...

and leave me.

My mind swirls around
although my feet are on the ground
and I get it all wound...

around my heart.

My fear of rejection,
is first before mind inspection
to make way for speculation...

and consider me.

I want to make the reveal,
but my confidence you will steal
when I tell you how I feel...

about you.

So tied up inside
where my thoughts, feelings abide
and hope one day you'll ride...

right next to me.

Now I'm all alone
locked up in my home
no time or place to roam...

come find me.

Weekly Inspiration: Stay focused

Maternal Spark (where creative moms shine) has developed her Monday's Muse post into Weekly Inspiration. Now you can stop by at anytime during the week to add yours. I'm excited because if I miss it then I can click over later and still participate. This is probably one of my favorite weekly posts because it always gets me to thinking.

So, let's see, what's inspiring me this week?
If you're a regular visitor then you know my birthday was yesterday. I spent a lot of time over the weekend thinking, avoiding certain thoughts and catching up on some work. Not exactly the celebration I had hoped for, but it is what it is. Or, more accurately, it was what it was.

Trickling over into the week, I suppose, is my desire to maintain the quiet, calm (in between the disquieting thoughts) and self reflection that I experienced from the weekend. My creativity peeked a little, which is definitely encouraging. So as I work on a major article that is due tomorrow, I hope to keep the anxiety and the impatience at bay especially with my 2-year-old daughter - who refuses to let me work - meandering about my office.

This is what she decided to do when I sat down at my computer:
Remove her clothes (nicely asking me to help her get her shirt off)

Then directing me to her room where she decided to put on pajamas (a random bottom & a nightgown) with a belt
Besides my fear that her antics will keep me from concentrating and working, I am also trying to keep the anxiety at bay that's trying to creep in regarding an ongoing "battle." My lawyer just called then the soon-to-be ex sent me a text. That's definitely anxiety producing developments.

Trying to maintain quiet, calm and self reflection goes right back to what almost everyone tries to maintain: focus, which is my inspiration this week. Focus on self to facilitate maintaining quiet and calm.

Wish me luck.

Me 41? Wow!

Today is my birthday. It's actually hard to believe since it kind of feels like any other day. The difference? So many wonderful friends have stopped by here (this blog), called me and posted on my Facebook page to wish me a happy birthday. And that's very much appreciated. Those wishes have made my day!

I'm not going to go into detail, but this weekend turned out nothing like I imagined or wanted. (Let's just say I had a real ugly cry as a result.) The bad part is I don't even really know why. One of the things I have figured out, like I think I've mentioned in the past, is that I really can only rely on myself. Let me briefly explain: I control my happiness, which I already knew. But every once in awhile I trust others to provide (fuel? help? give? carry?) some of that happiness. When that isn't met - without explanation or seemingly care - it is just short of devastating.

Now I sit here in the quiet (oh, how I love quiet!), semi-darkness and concentrate on thinking happy thoughts and I wonder how the next year will be. What have I learned over the past year? How have I changed? Who am I becoming?

My concentration is not on what others are doing or are going to do; it's on me and what I should do and what I am doing. It's on improving me.

Me.

That's what today is about, right? Yup! Beautiful, 41-year-old me!

Discount Surgical Stockings

When I was a young girl my paternal grandmother and I spent a lot of time together. She informed me early on that she had diabetes. She taught me about her disease, told me why she gave herself needles everyday and pricked her fingers and she instructed me about what to do if she ever got sick ("sugar dropped") when we were together: If anyone was around I was supposed to tell them she had diabetes and get the candy out of her purse to give to her. Or make sure she got orange juice.

Those instructions give me a little chuckle today because I've never heard anything similar and I have no idea whether that was medically correct. It really doesn't matter because the only thing that is important are the memories I have of her. She did everything she could to take care of herself with that disease for as long as she could.

There were other consequence or complications of having diabetes especially as she got older. For instance, since she stood a lot and had diabetes the veins in her legs would protrude (she developed varicose veins early on) and would cause her pain. If I remember correctly her legs would also swell. To help with this problem she would wear, what she called, support hose.

Nowadays those types of hose are even better for individuals with serious problems like swelling and venous disease. One that is committed to being high-quality and stylish is the jobst compression stockings. Jobst is the number one physician recommended brand in compression stockings and they have a wide selection of stockings.

My grandmother would be amazed and hopefully pleased by the advancements made in products like this one. Continued improvements in these products makes living a little bit easier.

Fighting tears

What is the point of looking at something in a positive light or trying to think positively? Okay, before you stop reading and jump immediately to commenting, let me clarify.

I get the point from one perspective: Thinking and being positive gives one a good outlook thereby affecting their mood, etc. The whole power of positive thing stuff. However, when you continually get kicked in the teeth regardless of your outlook and seemingly more so when you think positively then what. is. the. point?

Unfortunately, I am not even in the mood to write a long, random, deep post about my thoughts and feelings to explain what has put me in the saddest of moods. No dramatically described finger pointing to highlight others' wrongdoings against me.

There's just me. Sitting here. With tears slowly, occasionally easing out of my eyes, dripping from my lashes and sliding down my cheeks.

Just me.

Online tutoring

The summer before my oldest daughter Amber entered the 11th grade she became really sick and had to be hospitalized. When school began that fall she was often absent because of not feeling well (she missed almost three months of school) and doctor's appointments. Through her hard work, the help and understanding of her teachers and a tutor she was able to pass her junior year.

My daughter's tutor came to our house and that was really convenient, but there is a more convenient way and that's to sign up your K-12 or college student for online tutoring. Amber received Math help, which was key to her academic success. Not only will tutors work with students on their Math problems, but they'll provide the Math answers and assist with comprehending and figuring out Math word problems.

TutorVista, a leading online tutoring company, offers an unlimited monthly package that will covers subjects and allows students to freely use the service. If you and your student are interested you can test it out for free. Whether they need Algebra help (especially with those Algebra word problems) or guidance in another subject, tutoring may mean the difference between passing and failing.

Taste of tea - product review

I must admit that my favorite beverage is water. There's nothing like a refreshing glass of nature's clear liquid to quench one's thirst. But there are a couple of other beverages that I spend quite a bit of time with: Coffee, which I normally consume year round (I'm not going to tell you how much) and tea. They're both natural drinks too, right? ;)

When I learned about Dilmah, a brand that sells 100 percent pure Ceylon tea, I had to try a cup for myself to see the difference. Dilmah is touted as being preferred by tea connoisseurs because it's unlike mass-marketed brands that can be a mixture of teas from up to 30 different countries. Dilmah comes from one source Sri Lanka, which is "home to the world's finest tea."

I received two boxes of the tea: Natural Green and Earl Grey. I must admit that I've only tried Earl Grey on one other occasion and I didn't like it. So, that said, I dug right into the green tea. I boiled my water, poured it over the tea bag and steeped for about five minutes even though only two are recommended.

My first sip was like BAM WOW! Seriously. The taste was so distinct compared to other green teas that I've tasted that I was surprised. At first I thought it would be too overpowering, but the blast of flavor is smooth, pure and fresh. I'm now sold on 100 percent pure Ceylon especially Dilmah's Natural Green Tea.

I'm still stalling on the Earl Grey, but I plan on trying it soon because I'm pleased with the brand. If you're a tea fan then I think you would definitely find Dilmah to be among your favorite choices. Visit DilmahTea.com to learn more about the company and their tea.

UPDATE: OMG! The Earl Grey is fabulous. I felt guilty about not trying it yet and I think Earl and I are going to be great friends. :) I just added a little honey, but I think I'll try it next with a bit of milk. :D

Parenting woes

My friend, who a lot of you know as Mom, has great parenting ideas. I really like the majority of them and know that they will work with my children. Well, all of my children EXCEPT one.

If you've been following me on Facebook then you've seen me "complain" about my youngest offspring, 2 1/2-year-old Anna. She makes me feel like I've never been a parent before. Even her daycare provider who has been caring for children FORever says she's at a loss with her and just "doesn't understand."

That makes two of us.

Mom's idea, which I think she's mentioned before on her blog, was to give her a/some baby wipe(s) and have her "wash" the walls. Well, when I mentioned it to Miss Anna she was so excited. When she got aforementioned baby wipes in her hands and began the process she was ready to stop less than 10 seconds into the activity.

I snapped the above photo after she said, "I done," and tried to give the baby wipes back. I said, "Do it a little while longer." (Just so I could at least get a picture especially if it worked.) I had encouraged and praised the entire time we were getting the wipes.

SIGH

Here (below) you can see the not-so-pleased look on her face. I tried to get her to wipe down some other stuff to which she spent all of five minutes doing by going around the room talking to me the entire time about what she should wipe. She spent mere seconds on each item and proceeded to ask me should she wipe this, wipe that... wipe here. :(

I know folks think I am exaggerating when I say she doesn't give me even five minutes to think. Believe me, if you just spoke to me on the phone for about 10 minutes you'd see how often she talks to me or I have speak to her.

Will I ever get anything done in the next couple of weeks? Needless to say when the daycare opens again I will be the first one at the door. Sitting. Waiting. Smiling. Please pray for me.

A Man of His Word by Kathleen Fuller

I must admit that I was a bit skeptical regarding whether I would enjoy the book A Man of His Word by Kathleen Fuller because I didn't think I would like it. Blame it on my 15-year-old memories of reading "clean" novels that left me feeling gypped. Fuller's book had the exact opposite affect. It describes the Old Order Amish community in great details, it caused me to feel the emotions of Moriah Miller as well as her family and friends, and it wrapped it all up in a message that was delivered without being preachy.

Moriah goes from happiness to sorrow in just a few short months. Newly wed and newly pregnant she is abandoned by her husband, Levi. He not only left her, but he also turns his back on their faith. She moves on with her life with the assistance of the community, but refuses to receive help from someone who feels way more than sympathy for her. Gabriel - Levi's twin.

This novel was entertaining and romantic with touches of surprise and suspense. And, in the end, it was definitely inspiring. Despite the vast differences between my life and Moriah's I was able to see a correlation between my trials and hers along with an answer that is best for us both. I'm sure that regardless of what you're going through - big or small - you'll also be encouraged and entertained by A Man of His Word.

Childseat Safety Campaign

As a parent, I am always concerned about the safety of my children. One of the concerns I have is whether they're carseats and booster seats are installed correctly. The seats often have to be moved from one vehicle or another and in my old van there aren't those new latching hooks to keep the seat anchored. They never seem tight enough to me.

That's why I think the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Child Passenger Safety Week is important because it brings awareness to the issue of ensuring each child's seat is installed correctly to maximize on safety. Did you know that 3 out of 4 carseats are not installed as they should be, which puts children at risk? That number is very high.

Learn more about Child Passenger Safety and find out where a inspection center is located near you. All you have to do is enter your zip code or state and you'll get a list of centers or you can narrow the list to those that are holding inspections during this week.

Amy Lupold Bair, founder of Momfluence, is acting on behalf of NHTSA's child passenger safety efforts.

People, places, things

In spite of my intense irritation, increasing exhaustion and intense juggling nighttime juggling act there was a moment that I couldn't help but laugh. I was helping my son, who's in kindergarten, with his homework; I had the girls get in the tub and wash up while I ran back and forth.

Give homework instructions. (Why does my 5 year old have homework about symmetry, equal parts, problem solving, etc.?)
Give homework explanations.
Teach the subject.
"Tell me when you're finished."

Run to bathroom.
Give instructions (and threats!).
Help with drying off.
Give instructions.

"I'm done!" Calls the distant voice from the kitchen.

Run to kitchen.

Back and forth, back and forth...

Just writing it is tiring me out. Again.

I sat down to read another set of instructions: Draw pictures of a person, a place and a thing then color. When he drew his person's arms I asked are those ears. "No, arms," he said unfazed. Luckily I kept the thought to myself: 'Then why are they coming out of his head?' Silent chuckle.

He drew a picture of a house for place. A square with a triangle on top and a rectangle for a door. At this point I said, "Okay..." thinking he was finished, but he drew a square for a window with the "window panes."

Remember drawing houses like that?!

I couldn't resist. I smiled.

He looked at me.

He smiled...

We both laughed. Loud chuckles.

I doubt we were laughing about the same thing. I was amazed that he drew his house with the same window I drew as a child - well, me and every other child I'm sure. It was a welcome moment in a very hectic evening.

Do you have your own domain name?

I still remember when using the Internet became the "in thing" to do. Going from one site to the next was often a slow process and we were all amazed at how fast we could get messages from one place to another with email. Then regular folks started building their own websites for their services and products and, at first, it seemed a little difficult requiring some in depth computer knowledge. Even paying to have your own URL was not done by everyone because of the cost and, most likely, because a lot of people didn't realize how popular and necessary it would become.

Now just a mere click away and only a few dollars away there is the ability to create your own URL. And that's what a lot of people are doing. Purchasing a Domain Name is affordable through Domain Express, which offers all major extensions along with free URL and email forwarding.

Domain Express, a UK-based company, offers beginner, home and business hosting packages. That means they offer something for everyone. The site appears to be user friendly and has a price to fit every budget. If you're in the market for a domain name or interested in transferring then check them out.

Looking at the Sky on Friday

I'm glad I have a shot from earlier this week because today's sky is dark, dreary and cloudy, and I just posted a sky like that not too long ago.

I really like this shot. I'm standing in the driveway of a home on my street and when you look straight up you normally just see trees. I was at the perfect angle to catch a few rays of the sun.

They're here! They're here!

The Ecostore products that I won at Valerie's place, the Frugal Family Fun Blog. I actually won a $25 gift card to the Ecostore and I chose:

Manuka Honey & Kelp Soap
Lemongrass Soap
Citrus Spray Cleaner (naturally antibacterial!)
Aloe Vera Shampoo

If I don't forget, I'll come back and tell you how I liked the products. I am already impressed with them because everything (even the environmentally friendly packing products) smell so clean and natural. Oh, and you have to love their tagline: "No nasty* chemicals."

Thanks again Valerie and Ecostore USA team member Kathleen.

Tweet, register domain, win

Not only have I not seen such a quick way to register for a domain name, but there's a chance to win something at the same time. Keep reading because you can't pass up the Netfirms contest. There are a couple of ways to enter for a chance to win one of the new iPod Touches or a Macbook:
(I wouldn't mind a Macbook.)
1. You can tweet this statement: "Win a #free iPod Touch or Macbook from the @Netfirms #contest. Domain registration services via Twitter http://bit.ly/yJfJK."
2. Register a domain name via the Netfirms Twitter Domain Registration service for just $7.99.

You can do one retweet per day, which equals one entry and one domain registered equals one entry.

This is how it works: When you send a direct message to @Netfirms on Twitter asking them to register a domain name for you they will check its availability. If it's available then they'll register it and automatically add it to your existing Netfirms Control Panel. All you have to do is add your Twitter username to your Netfirms Control Panel.

Here are the details:
1. Log into your Twitter account.
2. Send a direct message to @netfirms that says "reg mynewdomain.com."
3. Netfirms will confirm by replying via DM and then it's ready to use.

How simple is that?

Now, what are you waiting for?

Love my lashes!

I decided to do a final update on my neuLash® active eyelash technology because I am so pleased with the results and I know you're itching to know if it really worked. I know this because of all the interested comments on my previous post. (Yes, that was sarcastic. I couldn't resist.)

I began using neuLash® on July 1st and revealed my initial impressions on July 21st. Now, a month and a half later I really see a difference. My lashes appear thicker and I've noticed that if I apply mascara I don't need as much to get the effect I'm looking for.

The top photo is from July 1st and the one below is today. The top one is slightly closer so I think it's pretty clear that the bottom lashes look thicker. What do you think?

Although I see a difference, I'm going to keep using it as long as I have some. It doesn't take but a minute right before bed to stroke it on right above my top lashes. It's a soothing gel, which is sort of an added perk.

Here's a little recap about the neuLash®: It offers maximum protection for lashes by delivering proteins, vitamins, peptides as well as moisturizing and rejuvenating ingredients that replenish and strengthen. All of which are supposed to extend the life of your lashes while allowing them to appear fuller and thicker. You can read more of my July 21st post here.

Interested in trying it out? Check out Neulash.com or visit Saks Fifth Avenue.

It's hot out there

Even with the change of weather it has still been quite toasty outside lately. The daytime temperature in Atlanta and most of the surrounding areas is still reaching the 80s (possibly the 90s when I haven't noticed) and I know that states like Arizona are probably still in the high 90s.

Living in Phoenix, and the surrounding area, one wouldn't want to have to go without air conditioning. That is why you want to make sure you have the contact information of a good Phoenix AC repair saved in your cell phone or posted on your refrigerator. Air Conditioning by Jay, a Phoenix AC company, offers emergency service and has a satisfaction guarantee.

If you live in that area, you never know when you'll need air conditioning repair Phoenix so don't hesitate to contact them today and pass the information on to your neighbors. Not sure you want to get the work done right away? No problem because you can contact them for a free quote. And if you want to find out some more information about the company, its services and about your particular problem then you can check their website, which has a lot of information for customers and consumers.

Stay cool.

30 Things...

30 Things About My Invisible Illness You May Not Know

It's been quite a long time since I've participated in a meme, but this one is in honor of National Invisible Illness Week, which is from September 14-18. There's a FREE five-day virtual conference with 20 speakers next week. Check out more about it at InvisibleIllness.com.

Now, learn a little more about me and what "they" say I have. (Some of you know exactly what I mean!) Note: This is a little long so please hang in there. I even learned a few things about myself.

1. The illness I live with is: Actually, illnesses. Lupus and fibromyalgia
2. I was diagnosed with it in the year: 2009 and 2008
3. But I had symptoms since: Around 1995
4. The biggest adjustment I’ve had to make is: Is realize how easy it is to hurt myself.
5. Most people assume: I assume most assume that I am making it up.
6. The hardest part about mornings are: Waking up to pain, tingling, stiffness, headaches and exhaustion.
7. My favorite medical TV show is: Grey's Anatomy
8. A gadget I couldn’t live without is: My laptop... no, my cell phone! Neither.
9. The hardest part about nights are: The tingling in my lower legs and my wrists and hands; hardly getting a complete night's sleep and doing all the nighttime tasks that are required of a parent: homework, baths, dinner, bedtime, etc., in addition to trying to get some more working in.
10. Each day I take __ pills & vitamins. (No comments, please) About 10 total.
11. Regarding alternative treatments I: hope that I can afford to get herbs and some other natural alternatives as well as incorporate more yoga and some water aerobics to make the symptoms more bearable.
12. If I had to choose between an invisible illness or visible I would choose: Now, what in the world do you say to that. I would say neither!
13. Regarding working and career: It's tough to work when you're in pain, lose focus 'cause of meds and symptoms and deal with the emotions of it all. Working from home is flexible, but stressful when relying on providing for yourself and your children. Although I love what I do, the pain and discomfort from sitting for more than 20 minutes or so is discouraging.
14. People would be surprised to know: I often have severe "attacks" where my body is weak, in more pain, sometimes my hands are swollen, my limbs are tingling and it sometimes takes days to recuperate.
15. The hardest thing to accept about my new reality has been: that when I do try to do something active that I've always loved to do I am most likely in pain for the rest of the day.
16. Something I never thought I could do with my illness that I did was: Hmmm??
17. The commercials about my illness: The only commercial I've seen is for fibromyalgia and it's pretty accurate.
18. Something I really miss doing since I was diagnosed is: I miss NOT going to the doctor.
19. It was really hard to have to give up: So far I haven't given up too much, but I am going to have to change my food intake and whatnot soon.
20. A new hobby I have taken up since my diagnosis is: Nothing new yet.
21. If I could have one day of feeling normal again I would:
22. My illness has taught me: to try to live one day at a time.
23. Want to know a secret? One thing people say that gets under my skin is: Let me know if you need anything.
24. But I love it when people: Just show up to help. (Hasn't happened though.)
25. My favorite motto, scripture, quote that gets me through tough times is: Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined. - Henry David Thoreau
26. When someone is diagnosed I’d like to tell them: Surround yourself with uplifting and helpful people.
27. Something that has surprised me about living with an illness is: Let me add something to that... Something that has surprised me about living with an INVISIBLE illness is that it doesn't change how other people live their lives unless they live with you. Everyone will move on whether you need help or not.
28. The nicest thing someone did for me when I wasn’t feeling well was: This is a tough one... my oldest daughter has done so much for me when I wasn't feeling well and when hubby and I were together he was pretty good when I wasn't feeling well... since then probably the nicest thing anyone has done is call me.
29. I’m involved with Invisible Illness Week because: it's one of the few things that I've found that's supportive and maybe it'll get the word out to non-illness sufferers that there could be someone in their life that doesn't look sick, but really needs more emotional, physical and spiritual support. Just because I smile doesn't mean that things are going well.
30. The fact that you read this list makes me feel: like you really care about me.

Embrace someone who has an invisible illness.

Do you swag? Swagbucks, that is.

Search & Win
If not, you better get started. I've already redeemed three gift cards: One from Barnes and Noble and two from Amazon. It's a nice way to "supplement" household needs and some wants. Swagbucks has a new toolbar, too, that makes participating easier than ever.

I really did it!

My health and weight loss journal

Yesterday I was thinking about my weight and, for some reason, it dawned on me that I am the same weight now (minus a pound) that I was when I was about 20 years old. That's about 21 years ago! And, for some reason, I couldn't believe it.

I was stationed in Rome, New York, and I remember there being weight requirements. At that time the maximum weight that was considered acceptable for my height and gender was 155 pounds (I'm 156 now. Yes, I've gained five pounds!) and you weren't supposed to be within 10 pounds of that weight. When I was out-processing from one squadron to the next my "true" weight was discovered. Sometimes individuals were randomly targeted for weighing in because they looked over weight, I - on the other hand - carried my weight well.

It was suggested that I lose a few pounds before someone found out that I needed to be on the "fat boy program," which is what it was unofficially called. I began going to the gym everyday and I quickly loss 20 pounds in about seven months. The Upstate NY winter began setting in and I traded my daily trek to the gym for some other activities. A month or two later I found out I was pregnant with my first child.

Wait, I just re-read that... LOL... no not those activities. Well, at least not all the time. I belonged to a drama club, spent time going out on the weekends and hanging out with friends.

As I think about the weight, I am proud of myself for getting back to a my somewhat pre-pregnancy weight. And I acknowledge that getting down to 135 would not be a realistic goal for me unless I was 5'2" tall. At 5'7" I think I am a healthy weight.

Now if I can just get off my booty to get a little toning and stretching done then I'd really be rockin' and workin' it.

If you aren't up to date with my health updates then you may want to check out my last health and weight loss post.

Monday's Muse: Least traveled road

Today, at Maternal Spark, we're reminded to take the road less traveled. And, for some reason, that thought/plan really intrigues me.

I am at a juncture in my life with several changes and decisions that need to be made. I'm coming to the end of a marriage (my divorce should be finalized very soon), my oldest daughter has started college and I'm hoping to go back to school to get another degree. There are a couple of other things that are on the table including my not having transportation right now (hopefully it'll be no more than a week).

Along similar lines of the road less traveled, my mother told me a couple of weeks ago to do what I think is best for me and, for once, don't worry about anything or anyone else or what they'll think. That intrigued me as well.

With those thoughts in mind, I am considering what - for me - is the road less traveled. In the past, I would make decisions based on what's best for everyone else with minimal thought of myself. This is the first time, in as long as I can remember, that I'm considering what I really want. I wish I could reveal it all here, but it isn't time yet.

I want to make decisions that will lead me on a different path than I've followed before. I want to improve who I am, be myself and have something that truly makes me happy. I understand that life can be tough, but it doesn't mean that I should always choose the easy road. I've learned that particular road doesn't always end in what makes me happy.

The road I need to take may be longer and bumpier than the previous one. It may cause discord and unrest in others. And, it may cause more stress for me in the beginning, but I see my happiness at the end of it.

I wish I could jump up right now and do what I think will make me the happiest. I wish it was a short road. It can be bumpy, but can the distance be reduced? Deciding on that road causes me a little apprehension because I don't necessarily like change or resistance. Change is supposedly good and, I guess, I am strong enough to fight resistance.

Birthday gifts

My birthday is this month and every year I treat myself to a little something. It could be a $30 shirt that I find on sale for about $5 (deals like that excite me!) or purchasing a novel that I've always wanted to read. This year I thought I would do something a little different and treat myself like I would someone else who is having a birthday. I'm going to do a little research.

There are gift guides that give you some ideas for people on your gift-giving list and a birthday is a perfect time to use one. ShopWiki UK Gift Buying Guides lists 30,000 stores, but you don't have to worry about the information being overwhelming. All of it is organized into categories to give an easy shopping experience.

So, I test it out for myself to make sure. Now since this is a site specific for UK customers (yes, I have friends in the UK that read my blog), I could only get an idea of what it would pull u as a suggestion for a gift for a woman and I was pleased with what the site found. There were purses, perfumes and personalized gifts that I would love to purchase for myself as well as someone else.

Now I have an idea of what I'm going to get myself for my birthday, but the question is: What are you going to get me? :)

Me and my living room

I just got up from sitting on my couch with my feet propped up. That wouldn't seem like a big deal if I could remember the last time I sat on my couch. It's been so long that I'd forgotten that I actually like sitting on the couch. I forgot how comfortable it is.

My teenager (who made it home for the long weekend! YIPPEE!) bought me a salad from Chick-fil-A and I enjoyed it while I read a magazine. It was such a relaxing experience that I am going to have to do it again really soon.

Because there isn't a television in the living room anymore (the dead one that sits in there doesn't count), I rarely spend time in that room. Today I realized that I can still sit in there to read or lounge. I guess, in my head, it was a "television room" and not a "living room."

Guess I should get off of here and start living.

Direct TV

I am sure you have seen the advertisements on television or heard them on the radio about Direct TV, which has more than 130 of the best high definition channels. Now that's really something because I remember when I was growing up we had a black and white television that received about six channels and they came through the antenna that was sitting on top of the television. The result was an often fuzzy or static-filled station.

That's a big difference from television of today and specifically DirectTV. A lot of television viewers prefer Directv because it offers a higher sound quality and a picture that is more clear than what one would normally see from regular television or even paid cable.

Now, I must admit that although I like the way that a clear picture looks I really can't tell the different. However, it would be a thrill to be able to scan through about 130 channels of programming.

If you like better - and more! - options from your television then you should check out the Direct TV specials. You wouldn't want to miss out.

A killer read

On the Woman's Bookshelf

There's nothing like murders, secret rooms and good guys turned bad in disguise to keep me interested in a book. Those things kept me rapidly turning the pages of Hothouse Orchid by Stuart Woods.

Hothouse Orchid is the latest Holly Barker thriller (I'll have to go back and read the others) and it will be released this month. Barker is a CIA special agent that let an international terrorist get away from her for the second time and now she's on a long vacation until the case is resolved. She takes her hiatus in Orchid Beach, Florida, her home town, where there's a surprise waiting for her.

Will the local police solve the murder/rape cases? Who's hacking into the CIA computer system? And will anyone, including a smitten police officer who Holly has something tragic in common with, figure out where and who the terrorist really is?

Although I enjoyed this novel I found the dialogue between characters a little tedious, but Woods is the author of more than 30 novels including having his Stone Barrington and Holly Barker series on the New York Times bestselling list. So, what do I know?

Take a look at my other book reviews; I'm sure you'll see something that interests you.

Low back exercises

For some reason my back has been hurting more than it normally does. I know that sitting at my desk for extended periods of time makes it worse, but lately I have been getting up more and still haven't found relief. It's not just my lower back, which I think is aggravated by some pending monthly "issues." There is also pain between my shoulder blades, the middle of my back and right under my neck.

I've been stretching everyday to try to relieve it, but since it hasn't worked I need to do some low back exercises. Back2Yourself.com includes detailed information about exercises for back relief along with pictures to illustrate. There's free access to exercise pages and subscribers get reminders to exercise. The program includes daily video instructions and a multitude of other features. A good way to treat your own back pain... and I'll have to test it out to treat mine.

To-Do Tuesday, Week 30

There are several weekly posts that I would like to do, but I don't often get around to each of them. Instead of beating myself up about not participating, I'm just going to do the best I can.

One of the ones I love to check out is at Crazy Adventures in Parenting where Lisa encourages us to tackle our to-do list. We don't have to get it all done today and you don't even have to post it today, just share it to get support and accountability for what's on your list for the week.

Those are all of my words; not hers. So if you want the real down low on To Do Tuesday you'll have to pop on over to her place to check it out. While you're there see what she, and everyone else, is up to.

Here's my list...
  1. Posting on SAS
  2. Updating my From Toddlers2Teens blog
  3. Investigating more grad schools
  4. Apply to some grad schools (???)
  5. Review SAR & FAFSA
  6. Paid posts
  7. Opportunity seeking (that's jobs & freelancing)
  8. Update my agent cover letter
  9. Clear desk/process papers/filing
I just realized there are a lot of things on my weekly to-do list and I'm not sure how to classify them so I've sort of thrown them up there. There's also some things on there I don't know if I want to or should put on here. It shouldn't be this complicated, should it?

Of course, you know there's the weekly housework and whatnot. Lisa includes a handy dandy, fancy HTML check-off thingy, but I don't think I am going to tackle that this time. Well, there you have it - a peep at my to-do list. Are you going to join in?
