Exercising restraint

I've mentioned in the past that I'm addicted to magazines and books... I simply love to read. I am always finding a free subscription to different magazines and I love that because I feel like I'm saving money. I get to feed my fetish without spending money.

As you know, once the free or trial subscription is over the publisher sends an invoice stating "to continue your subscription please pay xyz amount." Today, I opened up the invoice for Country Living magazine and it was $12 for a one-year subscription. That's 12 issues for just $1 each!

When I get an invoice that is that great of a deal I usually hold onto it while I consider whether I'm going to pay for it. But this time I didn't... I know every penny counts nowadays and paid subscriptions are luxury that I don't need.

I'll just stick to my free and trial subscriptions! What are you giving up or doing to save a little money?

What did you say?

In the minivan my two youngest girls (#3 and #4) sit on the middle row and my son sits on the third row, but that doesn't keep my two middle children (#2 and #3) from talking.

Here's a conversation the two of them were having the other day. (Inside info: there was an inch worm on the outside of the window and only Amareah could see it.)

#2: "'Mareah, is the inch worm still there?"
#3: "Mmm hmmm."
#2: "Huh?"
#3: "Mmm hmmm."
#2: "Amareah! Is the inch worm still there?"
#3: "I said yes, why you keep saying it over and over. I'm tired of 'peating myself."

Ahem! I wonder where she learned that phrase, mom says innocently.

You could be the grand prize winner

SunEGrl Loves To Shop is holding one fab contest. I almost hate to tell you about it because if you enter then that will decrease my chances of winning, right? Okay, well I won't be stingy and a contest hogger so here is what the grand prize winner will get:

500 Entrecard Credits
Italian Charm Bracelet With 5 Charms
125x125 button on my blog for one month
$50.00 Target Gift Card

Good stuff, huh?

So, how do you enter? Well, you'll have to hop on over there (before July 31) to find out. (Click her badge at the top of this post.)

Good luck.

Doing a happy dance

My health and weight loss journal

I am not the biggest fan of going to the doctor, but I have to admit I was pretty excited about going to the Women's Wellness clinic at the Veteran's Hospital today. I trudged sleepily out the door at about 7 a.m. for the 8 o'clock appointment.

I left my appointment with a plan for managing my fibromyalgia including some new medication, physical therapy intervention and a visit to a, ahem!, therapist. Hey, I don't mind that at all as long as I have my drugs! The goal is to work with my entire self to make this chronic pain condition easy - for lack of a better word - to live with.

I also visited the lab to check my cholesterol, which was high at the end of last year; did a diabetes screening; had my liver enzymes checked (yes, there's a lot I haven't shared) and all of the other general and not-so-general blood work that must be done. My mammogram will be scheduled for September. Yes, I'm old enough -- well, I will be in September -- for that. And tons of other fun stuff.

Now, join me in doing the happy dance, that this woman is taking care of her health care business! Yippee!

Oh, and before I forget, did you notice the slight movement of my weight loss ticker? You didn't? Well, I'll have you know that it's moved down one whole pound! That's right, fans, I am one pound lighter.

This week is turning out pretty good, huh? How's yours been?

Wanna be featured in First For Women magazine?

Amy Kuperinsky, an editor with First For Women magazine, is looking for women to help with a story about body image. Here's what she's looking for:

"First, we're doing a feature on body snark - the witty things women say if someone makes a rude comment about their body. One staffer had an example from her mom, who was approached by a kid cousin with the question, 'Why are you so fat?' Her reply: 'Because I eat little children like you.' We're looking for anything dealing with unexpected, rude/out of place/uncalled for comments about your body, appetite, or anything affecting body image. Then, we want to know what you said in response."

This is scheduled to come out around holiday time so anything "wintery/Christmassy/dinnertable-y" is a plus.

The deadline is this Friday, the 25th. She'll need your full name, age, city, state and a snapshot.

If you don't have anything for that then there are two other questions you can answer:

1. Has a family member ever said something nice (especially around holiday time) that left you uplifted, and enhanced your body image?

2. Has an event so horrible ever happened, something that demeaned you or made you feel down about your body, that later seemed like a blessing in disguise? They're looking for women who have made it through hardships with their confidence energized.

If you'd like to reply/contribute send an email to Amy at
