Gee, thanks!

A special thanks goes out to my 4-year-old son who was so kind as to awaken me at 3:45 a.m. Never mind that I had to rise at 5:15 a.m. and spend the entire day on my feet in a 7th grade Science classroom. And, to make it all even better, I was finally about to quiet my mind enough and go back to sleep around 5:00.

Oh, the joys of parenthood.

Was that too sarcastic!? :(
(Don't be fooled by the cuteness displayed here. He has a very evil radar that's tuned to disturbing mommy when she needs her rest.)

My Daily Routine Meme

My sweet friend Tina tagged me with this meme. Since I normally procrastinate about posting these, I thought I would jump right on it.

What time do you usually wake up? Well, my alarm goes off at 6:45 a.m., but sometimes I sleep until 7:20ish.

What’s the first thing you do? Stretch and then go to the potty.

Breakfast? Normally whole wheat waffles with green tea or coffee and some type of fruit.

Do you go to work/school? I work from home and I have my youngest home all day.

Do you like it? I love writing and blogging. I love seeing my daughter hit her milestones. BUT I don't love doing it all at the same time.

If you stay at home, what do you do all day? Blog, check e-mail, look for assignments, apply for jobs, housework, eat, feed the baby, give the baby a bottle, IM my NY friend, talk to my NY friend, blog, check e-mail, look for assignments, apply for... oh, you get the point!

When’s lunch and what you eatin’? Sometime between 12 and 2. Depends on the baby. What I eat varies.

What time do you get home from work/school? I leave to pick up the two middle children sometime in the late afternoon.

What do you do? Writer, editor, blogger, mom...

Dinner: When and what? Around 6:30/7 and it varies.

What do you do to unwind? Unwind... who has time for that? I guess I watch tv, read magazines or go to sleep. Oh and IMing.

What is your favourite part of the day? When everyone else is asleep and the house is quiet.

Who’s your favourite person to interact with? Usually my teenager.

When’s bedtime? Sometime between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Who’s bedtime with? My pillow!

I was gonna tag Tammy, but Tina beat me to it. So, I'm gonna tag Carrie and Farah.

A love letter to Quiet

Dear Quiet,

My mind and my heart long to hear you again. To be enveloped by your presence and caressed by your gentle spirit. You seem fleeting and distant, but I miss you so much. Do you remember the wonderful times we shared alone? It was just the two of us... sometimes the breeze caressed my face and I enjoyed the smell of the air. I remember relaxing and listening to you breath; the sound was like music to my ears.

I'm sorry for bringing those beings into your world. For interrupting what we had. I didn't know that it would rip us apart and destroy the love we had for each other. Please forgive my indiscretions/my bad decisions and the noise that fills these walls and seeps out of the windows.

I must admit that I often contribute to the noise while trying to cease it. I'll do anything to feel you again... even if it means making noise to hear your song. Come back to me - please. Don't deprive me any longer of your presence.

Removing the obstacles that stand in our way is my number one priority. Please don't give up on us: One day we will be together again.

Wanna take a survey and maybe earn some money?

I learned about a very cool site from Online Biz and Resources and I decided to try it out. You can earn money from taking surveys and posting them on your blog or site. From what I can tell so far (I've only done one survey), it's a little bit of money each time but it doesn't take very long. So, if you can do it in less than five minutes and earn a little change... well, check it out for yourself.

And, if you decide not to sign up then just have fun taking my survey. I'd love to learn more about you!

Working for pennies

Not too long ago I applied to be a substitute teacher ... again. (I used to substitute quite a bit about 10 years ago.) I just started about a month ago and have only had an assignment once. In order to be able to be on the substitute list for the next school year I must accept, and work, at least three times per semester/term. So, instead of waiting for the Subfinder System to call me with an assignment, I've written on my to-do list to remind myself to call it each night this week. I remembered last night and accepted an assignment for tomorrow.
As I lay in bed last night I was feeling somewhat pleased with myself for remembering to call Subfinder and for accepting an assignment. It's extra money, right? All of a sudden I had a sinking feeling as the numbers rolled through my head. I, in fact, wouldn't be making much at all.

You see, substitute teachers with a four-year college degree (that's me) make a whopping $88 per day (as compared to those without a degree who make $86 per day.) After taxes I should bring home about $82 for the day. Daycare for the baby for the day is $35 (their father pays for the other children). So, that leaves $47.

I guess I could look at this positively = that's $47 more than I had before. But I look at it like this: That isn't even enough to fill up my tank. If I bought a box of diapers and a jumbo back of wipes I'd probably have less than $20 left. Not enough for a bill. Okay, let's use the $47 for a bill. Hmmm? Maybe the water bill, which sometimes (really rarely) gets down to less than $40.

Then I got to thinking... the last time I had an assignment it was for half a day, which is $44. After taxes I had $40 and some change. I paid the sitter $35. That left $5. To me it's like I worked for nothing. Well, after tithes that left 60 cents. Okay, so I'd say that's nothing. (Oops! I forgot tithes on the last amount so I'd have about $42 to work with.)
The only way to make this somewhat profitable is to have an assignment everyday so that I can make up for the daycare costs. Expecting an assignment everyday isn't practical. This is a gig where you're called on an as needed basis. They even let you know during the substitute orientation that it is definitely not reliable as far as determining an income. Unless, however, you're able to land some long-term assignments (10 or more consecutive days for the same teacher), which pays $117.50 per day.
Right now, I think I need to come up with a new plan!

Join MommyFest 2008 Blog Party

I haven't participated in any blog parties, but when I found out about the 2008 MommyFest Blog Party I just knew I had to participate. This is the fifth year MommyFest is hosting this shindig and I think it's gonna be lots of fun.

Not only that, but there will be lots of blogging moms to meet, prizes, giveaways, and all kinds of goodies. Consider this my special invite to you: Join in on the party too. See you there!

Police gear

Every time I make the drive between my house and my best friend's house near Warner Robins Air Force Base I notice a billboard that's putting a call out for Atlanta Police Officers. And, I have to admit, with the way things are going for me financially it's tempting to check out the website advertised to see if I qualify.

Then I started to wonder where police officers and military folks get their gear. Seems like a silly thought to me because when I was in the Air Force (more than 15 years ago) all uniforms and gear were distributed from the base where you were stationed.

Nowadays you can get things like 5.11 Tactical Pants off of the Internet. My how times have changed -- everything is so easily accessible and there is such a variety available.

You want what?

My 3-year-old daughter never ceases to amaze me. She's bright, creative and somewhat of a bully! (Hey, I'm just being honest.) She's also one of those little girls that can play just as hard as her brother with worms, trucks and pretend insects then turn around and comb her doll's hair while asking her older sister to paint her nails.

Along with her new revelation about painted toes and painted nails she's discovering other girly elements. Yesterday she said, "Mommy, I want some lip paint."

"Some what?"

"Lip paint." She spoke slowly as if I was hard of hearing.

"Lip paint?" Makes perfect sense, I thought.

I promised to share some of my tinted lip gloss with her a little later and she happily sauntered away to run after her brother.
